Creating a Facebook timeline has been widely discussed in various online networking platforms. Although there are a few people who are not entirely enthusiastic over this new Facebook format, generally the change has been received with utmost support and interest by a great number of Facebook users.

The timeline is Facebook’s way to innovate its service in order for its users to maximize the perks and privileges of social networking. Through this format, Facebook aims to allow its members total control over their social networking exposure.
Here are two ways in which you could take advantage of the Facebook timeline.

Life Catalog

In the past people would use a journal or diary or keep photo albums in order to catalog all of the most important events and happenings in their lives, nowadays amidst the onset of several technological advances, both of the aforementioned life-documentation techniques could be achieved using a single platform, and that is the Facebook Timeline.

The Facebook timeline lets users take social networking to a different level. The system allows a chronological order of one’s online documents. From status updates to pictures, tags to special life events, everything is arranged in such a way that they would be easy to revisit in the future. This accessibility of past posts is one of the most advantageous features of the system. With the Facebook timeline, you could easily return to your past posts simply by using the timeline icon on the right side of your Facebook profile. From your earliest Facebook update all through your latest post, you are ensured that everything is catalogued appropriately. Since your Facebook updates are arranged by months and years, it is indeed more convenient to return to your past – as listed in cyberspace – and recapture those moments that made you feel all sorts of emotions.

And of course, the most inherent purpose of the Facebook timeline is for individuals to easily connect with each other. The system allows social networking members like you to share your life with acquaintances, friends, and family members.

Business Promotion

Creating a Facebook timeline could also serve the purpose of marketing or advertising your brand or business. Most companies nowadays, whether full-scale or small-size, have already branched out to social networking in order to achieve a greater market consciousness toward their products and services. If you are a businessman or entrepreneur, you definitely have to join this business promotion bandwagon.

Social networking sites such as Facebook are truly effective platforms in terms of brand promotion and awareness. With its vast number of users from all around the world, it is the fastest and most convenient method in order to tap your intended market.

By creating a Facebook page for your brand or business, you can take advantage of the Facebook site and reach a wide array of local and international audiences. This means more prospective clients or customers for you.

Moreover, the Facebook timeline features and functions are also quite friendly toward online businesses or brands. The Timeline allows for easy cataloging of your offered products and services, so those that visit your page can easily find what they are looking for. The best part is that you could fashion your page in such a way that it would best capture the brand character and product message you wish to impart to your specific market.

Considering that it is a free service, using the Facebook timeline for business purposes is truly quite rewarding. All you  have to do is follow a few quick steps and you’ll get the chance to arm your business with the marketing and advertising message it requires.

How to Create a Facebook Timeline

If you are new to the Facebook timeline, here is a set of simple instructions for you to follow en route to your eventual social networking self or business promotion.

First step is for you to visit your Facebook page. There you will see the “Get Timeline” icon. You must click on this icon which would then lead you to your timeline page. Study your timeline and see if it works for you. If it is something that catches your fancy, hit the “Publish Now” icon to activate the page.

The next thing you have to do is to update the cover photo. The cover photo is the large box on top of your personal information, profile picture, and wall. Make sure that in accomplishing this step, you practice enough discernment and pick a picture that would best represent you as an individual or best communicate your brand or business.

When Facebook announced Timeline for Pages on Feb. 29, 2012, they also updated their Facebook Pages Terms with new guidelines for cover photos.

These rules are directly aimed at deterring effective marketing a few techniques that are still being used on some Facebook Pages. I suspect that at some point there will be some sort of outcry from the users at large for the ability to be able to include some sort of marketing message in the Cover. I think you can will be able to included me in that outcry as well.

Specifically, a Page’s cover photo may not:

  • Encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines,
  • Include price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it on YourURL.com,”
  • Include contact information, like your website address, email, mailing address, or information that Facebook wants you to put in your Page’s “About” section,
  • Include references to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features,
  • Include calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends.”

And of course, “covers can’t be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else’s copyright.”

What Facebook is trying to achieve, is for your Page cover photo to be an eye-catching photograph, not an advertisement or wordy graphic. (We’ll see how that works out.)

Now the Facebook cover photo is not a common image size generally used on the Internet, and the rectangular composition includes a cut-out for your profile icon in the lower left corner.

Detailed measurements:

Important tips to remember:

  • Facebook will overlay a 1-pixel transparent gray border on top of your image.
  • If you upload an image smaller than 851 x 315, it will be stretched to fit. This will make your image quality appear slightly grainy or distorted. The best practice is to upload an image that’s sized to Facebook’s dimensions.
  • Screenshot measurements reveal that only 314 pixels are displayed from a 315-pixel image upload. The top edge appears to be covered by the Facebook header bar. A test with a 314-pixel tall image became distorted when uploaded, so do upload a 315-pixel tall image even though only the bottom 314 pixels will be displayed.

This means the best-looking cover photos tend to be images that are designed to take advantage of the cover photo’s exact size and shape.

After updating your cover photo, if your timeline page is a personal link based on your classic Facebook profile, you could then opt to edit the published posts on your page. Edit, in terms of the timeline system, could be one of things: permanently deleting past posts or limiting your audience for specific posts. These options are geared toward personal privacy and safety and you must use these possibilities as you deem fit.

You could also opt to delete certain advertisements found on the borders of your timeline page if you decide that they are irrelevant to you and if they provide unnecessary clutter on your page.

Lastly, you must also update your privacy setting. Upgrading from the classic Facebook page to that of the timeline one could affect your setting so it would not hurt to double check and accomplish the needed privacy updates for your page.

As they say, social networking has grown into a life-changing phenomenon that has a universal command regardless of personal background. On Facebook alone, the users are of varied histories. It is even said that if Facebook were a country, it would be the third most populated, next to China and India. Indeed, social networking has opened possibilities that were never present in the past. It fosters easy correspondence and connection between all sorts of individuals. As netizens we could and should maximize this phenomenon. At the same time, we must also be aware of our online responsibilities.

When it comes to Creating a Facebook timeline, we have been given another beneficial innovation which we must put to good use.
