The Importance of having an XML Sitemap

With the growing of the world wide web, search engine optimization has become one of the best ways to make sure that one has a presence online. However, it is important to know that this is not the only technique that one may use to ensure an online presence. Another very important technique to make sure that your site and content are ranked better and high in search engines is using a sitemap. A sitemap outlines the structure of a site in depth. There are two types of sitemaps that are generally used and these are the HTML sitemap and the XML sitemap. The importance of having an XML sitemap is as listed below:

1. Enabling Easy Site Navigation

If a website has a sitemap, it will be easier for a visitor looking through the site to fin the content and pages that they want faster. This is because the site map helps direct guide the user to where the information required is found.

2. Search Engine Indexing

Once a site has been hosted and is online, there comes a time when one may require to make some modifications to the pages and content found on the site. When modifications are made, search engine bots will index the modified pages. However, the search engine bots may take a very long time before they index the pages with the changes. This is where the sitemap comes in. The sitemaps make enable the search engine to index pages that have been updated much faster than if the site didn’t have the sitemap.

3. When Developing a New Site

When one is developing a new site it is very important to create the site’s sitemap. The importance of having an XML sitemap cannot be ignored here because the sitemap will enable the developer to know if there are any links that are not properly connected. This will ensure that the site you host has proper links and thus will be ranked better and higher in search engines.

Also when one has to remove some pages or links, they may not be able to know all the links that are linked to the removed pages. As such, one may use the sitemap to know all the links that will be broken if one is to remove a specific page from a website.

4. Dynamic web pages

Most developers fear changing or updating the content on their sites because they know that search engines may take longer to index their updated web pages. When using a sitemap, one may update the content on their site and the search engine will take a much faster time to index the modified page.

Conclusion

For any individual that wants to have an online presence, the importance of an XML sitemap is very crucial and should be given much attention. The process of generating sitemaps is very easy. One may go on the internet and select a free sitemap generator service from many sites. One should make sure they choose a sitemap generator which make the best sitemaps.
