Could you imagine if you connected with every client, past client, neighbor and friend on a daily basis what this would do for your business?

Having social media profiles is a vital part of running a successful business in today’s fast paced world. It’s not just enough to have several media platforms for your company. You have to know how to use them properly.

Connect with your past clients and tell them you appreciate their business and ask them how you can help them succeed. This will make them feel appreciated and create return customers. Thank new clients for their orders and stay in contact with them. Ask them for feedback on their experience with you and your service. This creates an instant testimonial. For everyone else, just say “Hi” and start a conversation with your next potential customer.

Keep your fanpage visitors engaged through polls, questions, pictures, events, and contests. Give people something to do when they are on your page. It’s not enough for someone to just “like” your page. What about your page keeps a person entertained? Creating conversation with customers is part of being personal. They feel a connection to your company and are more likely to feel more inclined to purchase from you, or at the very least, increase your network to other potential customers.

Facebook is all about engagement. And just like anything else, there are rules!

Shy away from promoting your own product on your personal page. People are on Facebook to be entertained, not spammed. Share customer referrals or thank clients for new purchases as a way to ‘plug’ your product or service.

If a picture is worth a 1,000 words, imagine what a video is worth! Too often I see business owners doing nothing more than inviting their Facebook friends to pay them for a product or service with a plain text status update. Instead, invite your customers to participate in an experience. Show them how great you and your company are through pictures and videos.

The most important piece of advice I have when it comes to social media for business is do not allow the internet to take over your life. Whether it is consuming your day because you are caught up in the latest Farmville or you have just given up because you now have 4 different pages and have no clue how to post on them, take a step back and ensure your time spent on Facebook is valuable.     Your blog is so spot on and informative, I just posted it to my personal FB page. So many of my “friends” abuse FB with sometimes twice daily “buy my product/service” posts that I have blocked their regular feed.

      Thanks Mike. My news feed used to look like a scrolling commercial break. It was on my last nerve! So I removed quite a few people from my list and started training business owners how to do it right. Facebook is for socializing, not being sold to!
